A well-designed deck can turn an underused backyard into a comfortable outdoor living space. When planning a new deck, one of the most important decisions is choosing the right decking material.
Wood and composite are two popular options, and each has its own advantages. The right choice depends on your preferred look, maintenance expectations, budget, and how you plan to use your deck.
Wood Decking: Natural and Timeless
Wood decking has a natural appearance that works well with a wide range of home styles. Its warmth, texture, and traditional look make it a popular choice for outdoor spaces.
Wood can be a good option if you want:
- A classic, natural appearance
- The ability to stain or refinish the surface
- A material that can complement natural landscaping
- A traditional outdoor living space
However, wood requires regular care to help protect it from moisture, sun exposure, and everyday wear.
Composite Decking: Low-Maintenance and Consistent
Composite decking is designed to provide a consistent appearance while reducing some of the maintenance associated with traditional wood.
It can be a practical choice if you are looking for:
- A low-maintenance decking option
- Consistent colour and appearance
- A modern outdoor look
- A surface designed for regular outdoor use
Composite decking is available in a variety of colours and finishes, making it easier to coordinate your deck with the exterior of your home.
Which Decking Material Should You Choose?
There is no universal answer. Wood may appeal to homeowners who prefer the character and natural appearance of real wood, while composite may suit those who prioritize easier maintenance and a consistent finish.
Your home’s style, outdoor space, maintenance preferences, and long-term plans should all be considered before making a decision.

The right decking material is only one part of creating a successful outdoor living space. Proper design and installation are equally important for achieving a finished result that looks great and works for your lifestyle.
